Build The Runway

In Delivering Happiness, Tony Hsieh tells the amazing story of the startup and phenomenal growth of Zappos.  In the early years, people wanted to grow quickly and add on new things, they wanted to hire and expand the staff. But Hsieh kept saying no. He told his company that first they had to build the runway and then they could take off. And for years they kept things streamlined and simple and solely focused on their core competencies, building a strong foundation.

The same has to be true with new churches. The problem is that churches are planted by entrepreneurial types who have all kinds of dreams, and desires to expand and to launch new ministries and campuses. But first you have to build the runway.
