A Better Man

Remember the movie “As Good As It Gets”? Remember the scene where Jack Nicholson says to Helen Hunt, “You make me want to be a better man.” Remember how you cried? Then remember how you choked on your popcorn and the dude behind you had to give you CPR and it was really awkward…

Anyway…

I wonder if you have anyone who “makes you want to be a better man.” I have lots of people who, through their example or teaching, challenge me to be a better preacher, a better leader, a better pastor, but I only have a very few people who make me want to be a better man….

I’m getting to spend a day or two with one of those people. His name is Kevin Brungard. He was in a small group I led twelve years ago at my previous church. Then he started leading the Youth Group there. Then he got hired to be the Youth Pastor. Then he left to plant a new church in Fredericksburg, VA. And all of that is cool, but the best thing about Kevin is who he is as a man. He’s one of those “a man after God’s own heart” kind of people. And being around him makes me want to be a better man.

We need those kinds of people in our lives. I hope you have someone like that. And if not, you should see about getting one of those guys! (By the way, this post is not meant to be sexist. Please feel free to insert the word “woman” for “man” or “lady” for “guy” wherever you’d like).
