Here’s what I’ve come to believe: If, as a pastor, you’re not content and joyful when your church has 20 people, you won’t be content and joyful when your church has 20,000. That doesn’t seem true. We all assume that if our circumstances were different, we’d be happier.
But it’s not about our circumstances, it’s about our hearts. If we’re not the kind of person who can be content at 20, we’re not the kind that can be content at 20,000.
And even more, let’s say that if you’re discontent at 20 but WOULD be content at 20,000. Think about it: What would that say about you? About your relationship with God?
It seems to me that it would clearly say that God is not enough for you. That God alone = not enough. But God + A successful ministry = enough. That may be hard to swallow, but it’s true, right?
Think about it. Pray about it. And let me confess that I’ve learned these things the hard way…
