Body of Death (Romans 7)

In today’s reading (Romans 7) the author, Paul, shares very passionately and painfully his struggles with sin, culminating in 7:24 when he says, “What a wretched man I am! Who will save me from this body of death?”

Did you know that there was a form of punishment at the time where a living person would be chained to a corpse? The exposure to the dead body would corrupt the living body until finally causing its death.

Paul may or may not have been referring to this form of torture, but regardless living a life that is powerless against sin and addictions and all the crap this life has to offer is excruciating and ultimately life extinguishing.

Which is why the verse that follows contain maybe the best words I’ve ever read, “Thanks be to God – through Jesus Christ our Lord!” Jesus saved me from my body of death, and I cannot wait to introduce Him to people here in Vegas who are stuck in their sin and need to be rescued.
