Fathered By God

Mentioned last week that I started reading Fathered By God by John Eldredge. I finished it and I do recommend it. It’s specifically written for guys who had absent or crappy dads. I think Eldredge does a great job of showing what the path from boyhood to to manhood should look like. And if you didn’t have that, this book will hurt, and reveal what you missed.

I wish Eldredge did a little more of what the title suggests – show us how we can be fathered by God. At the end of each section he talks about people who missed out on that phase of the masculine journey. And he closes each by giving a prayer to ask God to bring healing and be our Father. But there’s not a lot of practical teaching on how we can be fathered by God if we lacked fathering from our dads.

But all in all, it’s a good read. It also would probably be a cool book to read for a dad with his son (in the 12 to 18 age range) to generate conversation about what should be happening.
