Teachability

My friend Jason and I created a one year reading plan through the New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs that a bunch of people are doing together and so reading the same chapter every day. So it’s got me reading through Proverbs and I’ve been blown away by how many of the Proverbs are about being teachable.

Like in today’s reading (Proverbs 13) out of all the many things of life that could be taught on, of the 24 verses, all of the following are about being teachable: 1, 10, 13, 14, 16, 18, 2o. That’s a lot. So it got me thinking of what are some of the characteristics of a teachable person. Like: (1) Don’t mind getting corrected. (2) Are insatiably curious. (3) Have a humble view of self. (4) Have thick skin. (5) Wonder what they might be able to learn from every other person.

So, question: Is that you? If not, there are some serious warnings in Proverbs for you that should scare your pants on. So put your pants back on, repent, and get teachable.

Another question: If you wanted to start a church that led people to become teachable, what would you do? What do you think is the way to create a church culture that leads its people to become teachable?
