Who’s The Boss?

Every night our family gathers together to pray before the kids go to sleep. Lately I’ve had to remind our kids of something before they pray. I say, “Remember, we’re here to serve God. He’s not here to serve us.”

Why? Well, because my kids’ prayers are mostly, “Thanks for giving us a great day. Please give us a great night’s sleep. Give us a great day tomorrow. Help me with my test tomorrow. Let us win our game tomorrow.”

Obviously there’s nothing wrong with asking God for stuff. The Bible teaches us to cast all our cares on Him because He cares for us. But it’s so easy to have our entire prayer lives consist of requests. And, really, to treat God like He’s our butler or maid.

But we’re here to serve God. He’s not here to serve us. And when I remind my kids, I’m also reminding myself. Maybe you need the reminder as well?
