Here’s what I like about Paul (the author of today’s reading: 2 Corinthians 4) — how presumptuous he wasn’t.
- Why did he have a ministry? He says it’s only because of God’s mercy. He doesn’t deserve it.
- Does he promote himself? No. Only Jesus. He’s simply Jesus’ servant.
- Does he claim to be powerful and indestructible? Yeahhh, not so much. Not at all.
- So why and how does he make it through? Wellll, that would be Jesus.
In a bizarre culture where pastors can become like rock stars, maybe Paul’s example of humility, lack of pretense, total dependence, and blatant unpresumptuousness is one we really need to follow.
