Boom
I wonder if immediately after teaching what He did in today’s reading (Matthew 6), Jesus got together with His disciples and said, “Dudes, I was seriously dropping bombs right there!” Check out some of the bombs He dropped:
> 2“So when you give to the needy…” (Jesus assumes we WILL give to the needy.)
>> 6“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray…” (Jesus assumes we WILL take extended alone time to focus on and talk to God.)
>> 14″For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” (Interestingly, Jesus does NOT assume we will forgive people. But the consequences of not doing it are pretty severe.)
>> 16“When you fast…” (Jesus assumes we will fast.)
>> 19“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.” (Jesus teaches us to not give a rip about gaining possessions or having a big savings account.)
>> 24“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. (Ummm, yeah, enough said. )
>> 33“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Jesus teaches us that our mental attention should not be given to our problems and concerns, but instead to God and to living holy like Him.)
Okay, so big question: Which of those bombs fell on you???
