"Real"

I went to a church recently which promised, if I were to become a part of it, that I would meet “real people.” It said it right there on the brochure. I can’t tell you how excited I was. Because before reading that I had thought that it was a church full of mannequins, or maybe holograms, but real people? No way!

I’ve also seen postcards promoting a “Real Church” and that a church was about “Real Life” and would help me with “Real Problems.”

Okay, can we all drop the real thing? I’m pretty sure that any unchurched, non-Christian person we’re hoping to appeal to is not going to be impressed that it’s “real.” And I’m actually quite confident that telling them you’re real isn’t going to quell any fears that you’re fake.

So just drop the “real.” Really.
