Liar, Liar

Checking out today’s reading (1 John 1) I noticed something I hadn’t payed attention to when I’ve read this chapter before. Then I skimmed through the rest of the book and saw it more. So, before today if someone had asked me what’s the theme of 1 John I would have said, “Hmmmm, either love, or light versus darkness.” But I now realize there’s another contender: Being a liar. In this short little book, a couple of indirect times, and 5 direct times, John writes about being “a liar” —

1 John 1:6, If you claim to have a relationship with God but continue to walk in the darkness, you’re a liar.
1 John 1:8, If you claim to have no sin, you’re a liar.
1 John 2:22, If you deny Jesus you’re a a liar.
1 John 2:4, If you say you believe in Him, but don’t obey His commands, you’re a liar.
1 John 5:10, If you don’t believe in Jesus you’ve made God out to be a liar.

Not sure why I noticed this, or why I’m pointing it out, or why John was so focused on it. But I do know that I don’t want to live my life as a liar, and so this is stuff I need to stay focused on too…
