Another mistake we made early on is hiring staff from outside our church.

Now in our situation it’s been difficult at times because we reach non-Christians and it takes awhile for them to be spiritually mature enough. But I’ll just say that with outside-hires it’s been 50-50 if they work out. Not because they’ve been bad people, but because often they’ve been bad fits for our church culture.

I think it’s true with every church, but the more unique your church is the more dramatically hiring from outside is a dangerous risk.

Doing it again, I want to be developing potential future staff all the time, at every conceivable staff position.
